South Africa in Australia Dec 2008-Jan 2009

Well we need someone experienced opening with Marsh for 15 months then bring Warner in.

Problem is who? Katich is the only one but I would prefer one guy going at a strike rate over 90. Plus his fighting skills look needed in the middle order and against the spin. Also Watson is going to open after the SA tour so Katich will once again make way for Watson and yet again shatter his confidence. Hence may as well give Warner more experience at the top level, also gives him a chance to cement his spot with some good performances, or just experience and things to work on in the future.

Hopes can do a job at opening I believe. He does it in state cricket, and certainly is no crawler. Putting him at the top also means an extra specialist batsman in the middle and also a left-right opening combo.

Openers;
Katich, Jaques Haddin

I've said it before Syl, and i'm sure you know it too, Jaques has peformed for us consistently in One Day cricket. He was a huge part of our success. His chip shots over the legside were wonderful. He can score at 80-90.

Haddin will easily score at 90, and bring in Dussey at 4 in case we find ourselves 2-40 after 6 overs, he can contiune to accelerate for the last 4 overs of the powerplay. If he then gets out, Clarke and Hussey steady the ship, and hopefully Marsh if he stays in. Then Hopes and Johnson hit big for some late runs and if any of the other batsmen stayed in they will be able to score some late runs too.

Agree just don't think the selectors have Jaques in their ODI minds.
If we are to replace Warner may as well get Haddin up the top as he can play his normal game and not worry about building an inns which he seems to struggle with since he keeps wanting to go the big shot.

Yep, exactly. He would be better off just trying to hit the new ball as hard as possible. That's the way he likes to play.

Hayden being dropped is ridiculous and Australia's paying for it. They treated him horribly.

I agree completely.

I didn't mind the decision to drop Hayden from tests, but I am very confident in saying he would have performed very well in the one dayers. Of course, there is no way of knowing now, but I think he would have been a massive help.

Katich needs to be in the team. This whole "HIS TOO SLOW" argument is so wrong, it's laughable. For most of the test series, Katich was scoring very freely and quickly, just how he has been for NSW recently. The same thing happened with Langer to a degree, by the later years of his career he was scoring quicker than Hayden all the time. The only difference is, Australia really needs Katich now, Langer wasn't needed.

Yeah, his test form wasn't great, but with injuries and new players they shiuld have let him decide if he wanted to continue playing ODIs. Instead they're using a guy with little domestic experience, guys like Hussey and stuff. They try 1 thing and change it the game after.

Warner would be a good player with a stable middle order. But when it doesn't come off and he throws his wicket away, the middle order are exposed early. That's why they've been in trouble.

Seriously stop this Warner joke and bring in Katich.

To put out the best batsman in the team out for the ODIs is nothing more than a joke.

I think it's fine when you have a guy like McCullum throwing his bat around as he does at the top of the order since he's a keeper, but Warner's a specialist batsman. He doesn't have 2 games. If it's a tough pitch, he's not going to knuckle down and be more careful like a Hayden would. What i',m saying is that he needs to develop his game more. At the moment he's like Afridi was. He'll slog a decent score 1/5 games and the other 4 you'll be an early wicket down. Same kind of player.

He'd suit a side with a strong middle order who you know can bat the overs and at a good rate. With so many inexperienced players in the Aussie side at the moment they can't afford it or cover for him.

I have read Warner can bowl off and leg spin so that is something he can use for the future.
We do have Clarke back so that will add experience to the middle order, Hopes I would consider to be pretty experienced since hes been around the Aussie side for quite a bit so only really Dussey will be inexperienced after the openers.

Also looks like SA will rest Ntini, Kallis and Steyn.

I remember there was that "Johnnie Walker" question that asked: Which player made the first ODI Century ever? (or something like that). I remembered the answer clearly was none. Especially when Jaques made the highest debut score of 94 and was left out of the next game...

Ever since then, I've been thinking that the selectors just aren't into Jaques.

Katich and Jacques will never play ODIs again unfortunately. They should but the selectors wont pick them. They would be the last choice. Its stupid as there our test openers. If their not being picked coz their too slow, then why is Clarke in the team:p

We have that ability, it's just we are batting in the wrong order

Haddin
Marsh
Ponting
Dussey
Clarke
Mussey

Hopes
Johnson

Bold: Firepower
Italics: Steady the innings
Underline: Lower order hitting.

Formula1man, I've given you a great line-up which can score 280+ consistently if everything goes to plan but if it doesn't go to plan that line-up can still score 240-250. The key to scoring 300 isn't having every batting place filled up by players that can score at a strike rate of 110.
