South Africa in England

only players whom i like in english squad are Jimmy , Cook and Monty. maybe because i watched them a lot since they made debut. Anderson was always promising and it was wierd to see him out of the England squad just because of some bad form. Anyways he always looks dangerous and would hope South Africans play him well and doesn't lose anymore wickets to him. by doing that SA can give some lead and a lead of about 150 or more wud make me happy :D

Apart from Cook doesn't have someone as inspirational as Flintoff to replace him.

I know, such a bad player, that 199 really makes me wonder if he has the consistency to get to 200.;)

What a great day of cricket though, chances for the bowlers, some chances for decent strokeplay, 13 wickets (and FLINTOFF!!!!!!!:D).

We're not out of this game by a long, long distance. Some dodgy weather tomorrow so should do a bit if we get play. 3 key batsmen out, possibly one more should have been, but I can understand the 'benefit of the doubt' reasoning. Great to see Flintoff back, hopefully he'll get a couple more wickets tomorrow.

but do you get what i am saying? bell's innings of 199 was truly magical and shows what a player he is. But when will he do it again? 10 or maybe 15 tests later. I'm not denying his skill, he just gets in - and then gets out

Bell is more consistent than quite a few England players.

I like Bell and always have and i believe he is Englands best player.

What does Ambrose do exactly?

He can't keep and can't bowl.

Get Foster in.

Well seeing someone I'd never heard of in the team was a bit of a shock! I like to think I know a fair bit about English cricket. If I was Tremlett I'd be pretty narked right now.

Tremlett has 13 wickets in three Tests, Broad has 18 in seven Tests at a high average, so Tremlett is probably already "pretty narked". Clearly Broad can bat, trouble is England need WICKETS from their bowlers and now Pattinson is making his debut so two of the long sought after five man attack have NINE caps between them and a whopping 18 wickets

Terrible batting display, then again I said on BBC before the collapse that the tail began at six. (well it was out well before six, before they took tea in fact) And a lot of people harped on about Flintoff not being able to take the strain in a four man attack, well he's bowled a third of the overs so far and Lancashire haven't been using him sparingly either. The fact is the captain will use his most effective bowlers first, and that means we may as well only play four bowlers because the least effective will only bowl when everything else has failed - by which time we may well be heavily in arrears.

BUT, England have done the minimum to keep in the match. 100/1 or 100/2 would have been heavily in favour of the South Africans chasing 200, 100/3 is still in the game with 7 wickets for around 100 runs a possibility for today. 100/4 or 100/5 might have been too much to hope for, they're halfway to our 1st innings total, we're halfway through their better batsmen. Target for today has to be 150/5 or 150/6 and then if they get to 200 we should need to have at least seven down.

Anything much more than a 25-50 run deficit on 1st innings and we're in trouble. This is Vaughan's 50th Test as captain, here's his record as captain when we've been behind :-

Vaughan as captain (1st innings deficit)

P20 W4 D8 L8

Recoveries to win

- Won from 8 runs behind against South Africa (2004/5)
- Won from 65 runs behind against New Zealand (2004)
- Won from 65 runs behind against West Indies (2004)
- Won from 179 runs behind against New Zealand (2008)

Three of the four recoveries came against the weaker Test nations, the other only a small deficit. On the flip side of the coin Vaughan has lost only one Test having had a 1st innings lead - Sri Lanka 2006/7 (93 runs)

It isn't over yet, but to keep in with a chance of winning we need them out within touching distance. England under Vaughan have had the lead on 1st innings over South Africa in five out of ten Tests and won only four out of the ten Tests - one from behind.

haha, i know england only select wicketleepers on their ability to bat but i didn't realise we were getting them to opening the bowling now to:D

I agree thoughget foster in or atleast give him a chance like you did to

Anyone still think Broad is good enough? He's leaking runs. I told you against tough opposition he'd struggle. Averaging 45 against teams like NZ etc is pretty unimpressive.

Heh, Amala's luck has run out, he got a bad decision there. Still, he should have been out yesterday! :p

Read is statistically best England keeper out of the recent crop in Tests.

Wow, a guy who can't crack the Victorian XI is playing for England? I'm amazed! Last year Pattinson played about two FC games, despite Harwood, Siddle and Denton all being injured regularly throughout the season.

Observation: Amla got a bad call there. But I have noticed that when a bad one goes against England it is replayed countless times, when it is against SA it is replayed once or twice and that's it. I heard Nasser saying so many bad calls that have gone against England in this match, that it is good to get one back. Come on, ok Cook for Amla, and Vaughan tried what AB tried, which are the others that went against England??

It was pretty clear from the continued replays that Vaughan actually caught Amla out yesterday, so for him to get a bad decision to send him on his way evens it all out. It all works out in the end.

It's not that England are scraping the bottom of the barrel, it's just that Victoria is such an elite team, it's hard to get into. :p

god knows why Pattinson is playing. a man with only 12 FC games gets picked ahead of much more experienced and proven bowlers is stupid. Also watching from the North stand at headingley yesterday he didn't seem much.

It was a surprise, maybe a shock, to see him in the XI for the game, but he was going to play for England in the end. He is a decent bowler. Earlier last week he was selected in the 30 man preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy.
