Sri Lanka in Australia Dec-Jan 2012/13

So Starc is rested.....

Anyone wanna talk about the rotation? :mad

The selectors are bonkers for resting Starc. It didn't do hilf any good.

In theory sounds good but then Hilfy was rested and still got injured anyway. At least it does mean we get to see how Bird goes and Johnson outside of Perth.

As much as Starc made a big mark with his 5-wicket haul, Lyon as much as he bowled well is not being lethal enough on this wearing last day wickets. Yes of course with a bowler down in both adelaide & this test he bowled a lot & yes he @ least look capable of probably rolling over a side on a wearing 4th/5th day wicket compared to that dud nathan haurtiz - but he needs to do it in a test before the ashes for his confidence sake.

Siddle now is clearly the go to bowler & pattinson when fit will play. Hilfy is under pressure after Starc efforts since having a potent left-arm bowler who can swing it & 90mph is always useful.

Lyon's looked OK - good in patches, but those patches seem frustratingly brief. But I differ from you, I thought Hauritz looked OK as well...Lyon probably has more potential though, he's younger and less experienced than Hauritz was when he got recalled, so more room to grow for Lyon.

Starc needs to get it right to the top order before I start getting too excited about his bowling at the tail. Outside his 2 lovely inswingers to Kallis and Peterson in Perth, he's been struggling to trouble the genuine batsmen. It's been bouncers and yorkers that have got him wickets: Dilshan and Karunaratne with yorkers in Hobart, Kallis and Smith with bouncers in Perth. That's not really a sustainable bowling plan vs top order players.

The other option was doing what happened in the first series, potentially having to rest both your best bowlers because of back to back Tests. This way at least they know Starc will be fit and ready for Sydney. If Siddle is too, it will be a bonus.

I just think the selectors would stop a LOT of bitching, angst, uncertainty etc. among media, fans AND players if they just had an actual rotation system in place. Eg. for every 3 Test series you pick 4 pacemen and pacemen 2,3 & 4 all rest for one Test each. Pacemen 1 to rest only if needed (paceman 1 is obviously Siddle at this point). That way everyone gets a go, everyone gets some rest. You build depth and give experience to more players. The downside is that you don't play your 'best' XI every match, but that rarely happens these days anyway because someone is always injured. Look at what they do in baseball with their pitchers, they are all on some kind of rotation even when it gets to the playoffs.

The twitter feed on Cricinfo confirms that Michael Clarke WILL PLAY today. Jackson Bird has been locked in too to make his debut, Starc is being rested. NOT looking forward to hearing ex-players bitching about player rotation in the commentary box today...No one on channel Nine can talk - they rotate their commentators too :p Mitchell Johnson also comes into the XI, in place of injured Ben Hilfenhaus.

One indirect benficiary of all this rotation/debut stuff with the fast bowlers will be Nathan Lyon. Probably deserved to have more pressure placed on him after his lack of penetration in Hobart, and while a few questions were asked - the Bird/Starc stuff has been getting more airplay. Hopefully Lyon can bowl well.

Jackson Bird also adds yet another ex-NSW player into the team. In this 12 man team we've got Phil Hughes and Nathan Lyon (both at SA - Lyon technically from ACT, but NSW had first dibs), Usman Khawaja (now at QLD), Jackson Bird and Ed Cowan (both at TAS). Only Hussey, Johnson, Wade and Siddle have no ties to NSW.

Good start so far this morning. Bird's wicket was a typical fast bowlers wicket. This partnership is important for Sri Lanka.

Good Aussie bowling. Johnson's figures look bad, but I love that he was bold enough to keep pitching it up to Sanga just before lunch. Perfect line and length really, just Sanga played them really well, driving through mid on multiple times, and there was no movement at all to cause those strokes to fail.

Bird good too. All the bowlers good, particularly pleasing was the lack of easy runs worked into the leg side. Hilf and sometimes Starc had that trouble last Test.

Also, the over rate was awful. 25 overs in 2 hours, and Lyon had to hurry the 24th one just to make sure they got 25 in. In circumstances like this, Clarke should be MADE to start with spin after lunch. There's no excuse for being that slow - there was no DRS, no lost balls, no batsmen injury breaks. Just being lax.

No wickets in the first session. Not looking good for Sri Lanka. Clarke goes past Ponting's record.

Sri Lanka have done well to peg it back here but I think it is a little too late

Australia all out with the lead over 300. Not looking good for Sri Lanka. Shame Johnson didn't get his ton but he did play really well. Bird didn't look too hopeless.

Awesome stuff all round from Johnson, can't keep him out of the game. And another wicket.. might've cemented his place for awhile now, much to the delight of Syl.

Looks like this will be over by the end of the day unfortunately. Probably only need 8 wickets total too.
