Sri Lanka in England/Netherlands

Valid excuses nevertheless
they've been around for a while.

Kabir Ali and Sajid Mohammad have been in county cricket for a while. Plunkett has been in the circuit for sometime now. The rest have played county as well.

Now, county cricket may not match international standards, but when you're drafted in the team, you play the best cricket. Even if you fail, you cannot offer excuses.

Well what a game, If only SL batted first and played like that, surely SF record would have broken.

Harmesion got slaughtered. I really don't think even England had a full strenght team it would have mattered. Don't forget SL played with out their captain Attapatu and Murali as well.

Well I hope England pick up their pieces and get ready for Pakistani's otherwise they will walk all over Engalnd as well.

If England lose from like that, oh boy, I can't even find the right words, Harmison 10 overs, 0/97, Ali, 6 overs, none for 72, amazing.

Great record opening partnership of Jayasuriya and Tharanga. Tharanga is slowly stabilizing his position in the Sri Lankan team.

And with that Harmison got a British record. :clap

Also it's good to see England on the 8th ODI position.

I would like to see a Zimbabwe vs England or Bangladesh vs England match now. Zimbabwe didn't do that bad against West Indies and Bangladesh played their heart out against Australia recently. Too bad matches like that can't be quickly arranged.

Lewis Michael 10 0 113 0 :D

If Sri Lanka continued they could of easily surpass the WR total set by SA. This Sri Lankan team in the ODI format is real class. They have performed brilliantly in all facets of the game, except for some shoddy fielding yesterday. If the WC was held tommorrow or in the next month, I would back SL to at least qualify to the semi-final if not win the WC.

Let's see the problems in the team, BRESNAN surely has to be dropped, ALI dropped after yesterday's performance. The bowling department is the major concern, surely Gough and Hoggard will have to get another crack in the one dayers. Also Strauss should not maintain the captaincy, he was really abysmal throughout the whole series, it has to be Trescothick or Flintoff to be the replacement for the remaining summer. Dalrymple has really been the only bright light in the new England team, he bowled very well yesterday and throughout the whole series and chipped in with some handy runs.

The team may be hit by injuries to many key players but getting thrashed comprehensively in every match is a real dissapointment. Hopefully when England are back to full strngth they can string in some performances which was apparent only a year ago.

My ideal England team for the ODI's against Pak is:
Trescothick
Cook
Strauss
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Dalrymple
Prior
Gough
Anderson (if he returns)
Harmison

I don't think it's Strauss fault. He's been getting lot of stick becasue of the losses. He can't bowl the all the deliveries for the Engalnd bowlers. Seriously what can Strauss do when all England bowlers bowl rubbish. Even Harmersion didn't bowl that well in some games.

I don't think the world best captain could have done anything better with bowling like that.

I havn't seen this seconed innings and unfortonatly theres no highlights :/ which sucks.

Kabir Ali, despite the english fans supporting him is absolutly trash. Of all the bowlers he has defiantly looked the worst to me. In second Mahmood, third Bresnan and fourth Plunkett. ALl four of them were not up to standard. Even Harmison was a disgrace. Dayrymple bowled and batted superbly.

THe pace bowling could perhaps be the worst ever in an ODI series. I really hope cricinfo calculates the average bowler RPO, average etc. and compares with some other shocking bowling performances in a series. This last game tops it off. You can't afford to bowl like that to the best opener in ODI cricket.

Strauss's captainy is pathetic. That needs changing before Pakistan. I certainly hope we won't be captaining the tests. I am not saying he was the reason they lost, but he sure didn't help it. It can't be easy when the bowlers are all over the place, but his rotations were extremly poor. The times he took powerplays were ridiculas.

If England played Bangladesh tomorrow, then Bangladesh would pound them too. I am sure of it.

Ok, lets look at the facts. England are without many key players. They can be excused to some extent, but these backup bowlers are not up to standard and should not have been kept. Bresnan is the main one. He bowled bad in 5/5 matches and wasn't replaced. Kabir Ali was worth a second try but he just again proved that he has absolutly no control over his bowling. When he wasn't bowling waist high and higher full tosses, he was bowling wides and half volleys galore. Plunkett bowled well in sections and poorly in others. Sadly he was in the top 2 of the the pace bowlers, him or Harmison who falls in the same category. The selectors didn't do their jobs. Not enough action.

With all Gough's experiance he should have been given a go straight away. Hoggard is accurate, why wasn't he tried?

England, I believe, have no hope at winning the ashes. They have gone downhill in tests and ODI's since then ironically. Injuries are a problem also. Australia have only improved and found new talent. Englands depth needs working on. They need to set up a young player system and train them.

Really though, Tharanga looks like he is going to be a star player for Sri Lanka. What a fantastic series from him. Jaysuria is just amazing. He truly destroyed England. Deserved man of the series. Thats 6 centuries in that series. 2 each for the top 3 for Sri Lanka. That is just amazing. Maybe thats a record. I bet hundreds were broken. Seriously what a one sided series. Not great really. I perfer close games. I still want to see Jaysuria take these bowlers to the cleaners and hear the commentators. :(

Big changes are needed. At the end of the day, there was no excuse for the England bowlers to bowl that badly. None. There wasn't much international experiance but they all should have been able to do the basics and bowl straight. They had no control. Sri Lankan pacemen, by comparison, bowled very well. Malinga, Vaas, Fernando was a little untidy but looked amazingly accurate compared. He got wickets though which was important.

Improvements are needed. I really hope England put up a fight against Pakistan.

Hard opinions from me, but its just not good enough for a high profile team like England. They are going to need depth for the World Cup, CHamps Trophy, Ashes and they need to find some now!

Hoggard has been tried many times at ODI level, first in 2002, then in South Africa 2005 and against India this year. He's failed and been expensive in each series.

Well, this doesn't have to be described, does it?
Anyway, Dalrymple was really the only outstanding positive in which England may take from this whitewash, with the other aspects, in general, being absolute tripe. They need changes, and fast- as mentioned by Sureshot countless times, the coaching staff/selection panel seem to be unbelievably inept when dealing with the ODI game, along with a bout of unfortunate injuries which've really set back the side in so many vital areas.

2002, whats a long time ago. 2005, hmm well depending on how he went, he may have been worth a try. Vaa's first overs where the ball swung were brilliant. Hoggard can swing the red ball (dunno about white of course) but still. I guess it is possibly a good thing. Hoggard being a part of the team could have done him damage for the tests comming up.

Plunkett, Ali, Bresnan and Mahmood were all expensive too, in fact statistically all inferior to Hoggard. Hoggard has played what 26 ODIs, hardly many games. Give Hoggard an extended run in the ODI, especially with the form he has been in recently in Tests. With Jones, Flintoff out injured you need Hoggard's experience.

Dalrymple was a positive for the English, I didn't know much about him before this series. Made some handy runs down the order and kept the runs down with the ball.

The ODI bowlers for the Pakistan series should be in my opinion.

Gough
Harmsion (to start with anyway)
Dalrymple
Loudon
Combination of part timers - Collingwood , Pieterson, Tresco.
