BUmrah no ball loses the match once more for us!

I honestly believe that without Kohli in the side, India becomes a mediocre side - especially outside of India. Kohli not only adds his class and temperament with the batting, with also seems to bring an X-factor to the side - currently they're playing very deflated cricket.

Edit: Also really sticks it to critics of Dhoni. I strongly believe that he will be key for India in the forthcoming years leading to the WC, although his innings really does add to the argument that he should be in a higher batting position.

I wouldn't really come to that conclusion after just 1 match. It could well have been an off day for India. However, I doubt we will get to see many matches without Kohli....

Based on one game?

I have said it numerous times- Our limited overs batting lacks 'punch'. In my 25 years of watching cricket, this is the first time our bowling is the best in the world. I have no doubt about that. The two wrist spinners and the two seamers. The problem is the batting. Apart from Kohli and Rohit, no body walks into the side. Rahul may have got out for 0 today as well, but the bottom line is that he has a well rounded game and he isn't even in the squad. How he ranks lower than Rahane is beyond me. DK keeps throwing chances away, same with Pandey. He's just not got an extended run or capitalised on his chances. Iyer is IMHO a technical sham.

My ODI XV for India in all conditions, specially England where the 2019 WC is-

:bat: Virat Kohli :c:
:bat: Rohit Sharma
:bat: KL Rahul
:bat: Maneesh Pandey
:wk: Rishabh Pant / Dinesh Karthik
:wk: MS Dhoni
:arwk: Suresh Raina
:arwk: Hardik Pandya
:arwk: Ravindra Jadeja
:bwl: Yuzvendra Chahal
:bwl: Kuldeep Yadav
:bwl: Bhuvaneshwar Kumar

I agree with you. In important games whenever we've seen Indian team in trouble with the bat Dhoni and Kohli have rescued the team. In Pak v Ind, Asia Cup 14 and T20 16. We saw that it was Kohli who stood firm in the crease. I won't say Indian team is mediocre, but what differentiate Indian team from other teams is Kohli and Dhoni.

Not Asia Cup 14, but 16

Just one game? Oh come on. They lose one game and you say like they have lost a series.

I've always seen that India underestimate the oppositions before every game (first game of a series) if the team is inexperienced or consists of young players. But they comeback strong once they understand the strength and weaknesses of oppositions.

It should be noted that Virat has been that x-factor who would usually hold and build the innings well supported by either an opener or the middle order. India have come across such situations and pitch types in the past as pointed out by some members and Virat had rescued the team (apart from the WC15 semi final match).

Rohit's pitch analysis has been pathetic. What he said during the toss has turned out to be the most embarrassing moment of the match.

A bit harsh to call India a mediocre side without Kohli. Of course he has guided us to victory in many chases, I feel even he would have failed today with that ball just swinging around like crazy and that extra bounce. I still don't get why the whole team gets bashed just on one game! Watching the first 15 overs of the games, it was looking quite tough for the young batsmen at the crease playing balls like that. Dhoni at least saved us form being 60 all out but every team has a bad match like this. We barely see pitches like this in India so this was quite unexpected to see and hopefully the youngsters have learned from their mistakes, which is always the most important thing. That is simply ridiculous seeing a young team being just being badly criticised because of being "Kohli-less" when these players have immense talent.

I don't think India are anywhere near as dependent on Kohli as we were on Sachin Tendulkar in the 90's. There are a lot more good players in the team apart from Kohli, than there were when Sachin was the lone guy amidst absolute mediocrity. Its just that coincidentally we came up on a pitch that has a lot of zip and life in it and we failed. Had this been a typical subcontinental wicket, I would've backed us to do well despite the absence of Kohli. On a pitch like this (if Rohit and the backroom guys read it properly), Rahane should have been drafted in for Dhawan. Rahane is a 'tough weather' guy and almost always plays well when conditions are not in favor.

MSD proved his worth, more than required. As others have said, the talk on No.4 should be dropped and Dhoni should be given that spot. Anyways the top 3 is cemented with Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli (yes Dhawan, who somehow activates beast mode in ICC tournaments and that too in English conditions). If Dhoni bats No.4, you get in big hitters (e.g. Raina, Pandey, etc.) and then Pandya and the bowlers. There should be no doubt that MSD should anchor the side into the 2019 WC. With his fitness levels still very much intact and his keeping as agile and quick as ever, his experience would help India a lot in that tournament.

This match proves, No replacing Dhoni at least till 2019 WC.

I think this mentality of having Pandya as our 5th bowler is absolutely piss poor. He is definitely not good enough at this stage to bowl 10 overs every game. This is where India needs to decide. If you bring Raina in, you relieve the pressure even more off Pandya.

In my opinion, I would go for my top 3, Dhoni, Pandey, Raina and Pandya as my batting all rounders followed by 3 seamers that include Shami and one wrist spinner. If the wicket is flat, I'd drop Pandey for another wrist spinner.

Under no circumstances would I play Pandya as someone who would give me 8-10 overs. Him and Raina would be my insurance policy for the bowler who has the bad day.
