Trans-Tasman Trophy (NZ in Australia), December 2011/12

Starc's last 3 games have been at the Gabba - 3/88 and 1/45 against the Kiwis. 5/39, 5/66 and 2/61 against Qld. And averaging 58 with the bat in those games ;)
I think he's already justified his position now too, picking up the wickets of McCullum and Ryder.

Nothing to do with NSW bias, although we are superior to the other states.

Typical batting display from us, nothing has really changed apart from the media hyping us up and telling us we have a chance. All five wickets have been poor shots.

Uh hmmm didn't know that.:facepalm

Btw I also said I'd take Cutting over Starc before the match :p Just don't think his selection has anything at all to do with NSW bias.

Well done Clarke, fearsome tweak head.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I'd say the Williamson wicket was an exception, because that was also down to some good bowling, but the other four wickets were all from short and wide and deliveries.

Tbh I'm not really sure the idea behind winning the toss and batting, and batting how our top five did. If you win the toss and bat you have to go into the innings with a mindset of batting five sessions, which was clearly not the mindset.

Taylor's dismissal summed up where New Zealand cricket is at, as the captain I have no idea wtf he was thinking just before lunch. That was such a poor option.

We're probably lucky to even still be batting now, with Australia having dropped three catches that all probably should've been taken at this level. Brownlie was especially lucky multiple times early on, but at least he's seemed to have settled down now. And yet again Vettori is trying his best to get us up to an alright total. We've still got batting to come so we should be able to get up to maybe 250, but even then that's well below par considering the ease at which the surface seems to be playing since these two have got themselves settled.

Good call keeping Lyon, I haven't watched the coverage so far but for him to get a wicket and look dangerous on day 1 at the Gabba is very promising. Sounds like Starc has been getting movement which is a welcome change from Johnson.

This partnership is turning into a joke :facepalm Clarke better score some runs to make up for that pathetic drop that would've ended the partnership before it even began.

Vettori has always been a pest down the order.
Got a glimpse of Pattinson's opening over, looks like he was out swinging it at pace, promising signs there.

A lot of people try to push the spinner out at brisbane, but there is little weight to the strategy.

Bloody rain.

Like what I'm seeing from Starc. He's just this giant who strolls up to the crease, lazily points his arm straight up in the air, and then before you know it you've got a swinging, bouncing delivery hurtling towards the batsman at 138-147 kph.

Oh, and he's 21. Should be able to nudge past 150 kph once he's 23-24.

Guptill's wasn't.

I'm guessing if he wants to he could hit the 150km/h mark. Cummins was bowling a similar pace to Starc and we now he can hit the 150. Starc could be the final nail in the coffin for Johnson. Seems to have his knack for lucky wickets (which Johnson has lost lately), got his bounce and most importantly has a good release which should lead to more consistent swing.

Tbh neither Starc nor Pattinson impressed me that much. Siddle was impressive again, and I know you can't keep comparing new Australian bowlers to McGrath, but I don't think Starc, Pattinson or Cutting would make many other test teams other than NZ, Bangladesh, WI and Zimbabwe. I don't think any more than one of the three will play more than 20 tests.

However, I could hardly say that NZ's batsmen were in stark contrast. Brownlie looked more than shaky and once again Dan Vettori is our only reliable batsman. A lot rests on him, with bat and ball, from here.

NZ needed this partnership (80*) badly. Still Aus' day but least NZ have a chance now, because at one stage this match was only going one way.

Yeah I felt the same. You have to take into account that even Siddle was swinging the ball today so the movement they were getting wasn't surprising, the lack of control was disappointing from the debutants. Can't wait till Cummins returns for the 2nd Test to see some proper Test match bowling :thumbs

The trio of Pattinson, Starc and Hazlewood appeared on the scene around the same time and were hyped up, but after watching them play I definitely rate Hazlewood higher than the other 2. He and Cummins will make quite a partnership for years to come I feel.
