Add me to the chorus of kinda unimpressed Aussies at our 2 new quicks. The first hour was pretty awful bowling by Australia the ball was swinging, pitch was seaming there were wickets to be had. Then they showed a pitchmap of what had happened after about 45 minutes of play and to be honest it looked like a dartboard
Their 2nd spellls were a bit better, but there's nothing really exceptional RIGHT NOW. Both these guys have the potential for sure: they bowl great balls occasionally, have the pace required, and good height and build for it. But pretending like they are good bowlers now is a bit optimistic. If anyone thought the inconsistency was going away after Johnson left then sorry, but I think it got worse. I feel a bit the same way about Cummins, he did some great things in Jo'burg, but he's still pretty rough around the edges, and taking all those wickets on debut will just ramp up pressure and expectations on him that he probably doesn't need right now.
I'm not criticising the selections for this match, there really wasn't much choice, but I'm not sure the youth at all costs idea is the right one.
Siddle did impress me though, and I'm usually negative on him. First 3 overs were average, but after that he kept peppering that full/good length and ramped his pace up to mid 140s after lunch, one ball hit 150. That's when you know he's in rhythm. Having a pitch/conditions where he can move the ball makes him a Test level bowler, usually I find him just a dead straight trundler.
A lot of people try to push the spinner out at brisbane, but there is little weight to the strategy.
Indeed. Lyon was fantastic yesterday, and I was annoyed he didn't get the ball straight after lunch. Williamson didn't know what to do with him, and he was all over Ryder in the over before lunch. If Lyon had been bowling when Vettori came in then it could have been different. Vettori was happy to be aggressive to Lyon in his 2nd spell, mainly because Vettori had been in for an hour.
