2014 World Cup Group D: Uruguay, Costa Rica, England, Italy

lol England

Hmmm... which World Cup group were Scotland in...oh yeah that's right - they didn't qualify. Again.

Italy were rubbish today - I can see Costa Rica and Uruguay going through; great World Cup this is turning out to be with both my teams either out or in danger of going out!

Goal difference, yes, but I can see England losing to Costa Rica so I fancy them to win the group.

It's been a great World Cup so far, unfortunately England have added nothing to it. Excellent against Italy, rubbish last night, rightly going home.

Agreed - our defending was especially terrible vs Uruguay. Very disappointed especially after how we played against Italy - what happened to all the flair and confidence? Typical nervy England performance.

Refereeing in today's game and Uruguay game was pretty terrible though.

The Lorenzo Insigne that come on the 2nd half was awful. Nothing like his Napoli self.

A somewhat weird spot for Italy, however. If they pushed too hard and conceded a sucker punch and lost 2-0 they'd have to beat Uruguay to qualify as a draw would put them out on goals scored. a 1-0 loss and any draw puts them through over urugay on goal difference no matter what. 1-1 draw v costa rica was almost the same as a 1-0 defeat as if italy lost v urugauy after drawing they'd be out unless england beat costa rica by 3 goals, or by 2 if italy lost like 3-2/4-3. If they snatched a draw then it didn't improve them much as a loss would still put them out a pretty high % of the time and a draw guaranteed they were through.

had a few beers so not sure if that's very clear, but basically italy were in a position where conceding another was much worse for them than equalising was beneficial to them. I'm not saying they accepted the defeat, i'm just saying they didn't commit as fully as you'd expect a team 1 down with 5 minutes to go to do.

Note to self:

When pissed please refrain from talking absolute crap on PC

God Save Your National Team !
My 2 Goals Were Supreme !
God save your team !
Never victorious !
Your passing's laborious !
Sadly for you I'm a genius !
God save your team !
Save your team !
They're dreadful !
I think I'm going to cry !
But in a good way !

Rooney and Suarez both had two chances - Rooney hit the bar with one and blazed the other at the keeper - Suarez scored both. That was the difference in that game, otherwise there wasn't much in it. Our defending for Suarez' second goal was disgraceful - good finish sure but the chance was created by schoolboy defending.

Not sure if it's the right thing to keep Hodgson on either...but then again who could do any better?

Probably best we went out early otherwise a mauling by Germany/Brazil/Argentina/Holland surely lay ahead. Spain out - if Italy don't win it, my choice is Holland. Don't want Argentina or Germany to win it but something tells me Germany will win it. Sigh.

Totally agree with this. I said on twitter at the time that Italy were settling for a 1-0 defeat because they knew Uruguay had lost by 2.

Most people have heard or read J Wilson book, the Anatomy of England Amazon.com: Anatomy of England: A History in Ten Matches eBook: Jonathan Wilson: Kindle Store so returning to Belo horizonte has a dark historical significance.

I'm holding back my thoughts to see what happens & I might sound arrogant saying this but ENG have to beat Costa Rica. A draw or defeat & I don't know how serious English football can take itself anymore.

England might just be on their way home with no points :p

I might well put money on it. I can't see us beating this Costa Rica team...much as it pains me to admit that. :facepalm If we'd managed to dig a draw out of the Uruguay disaster, then I reckon we would've had our tails up again and would expect a performance like the Italy one. As it is, there's nothing to play for except 'pride', whatever that means...
