Australia Tour Of India 2012/13

At least we picked a 17+ man squad the series before the Ashes this time. Slowly learning we are. If X or Agar play then I will have lost all faith. Although I would actually prefer Agar over X.

Hope they revisit that classic Chennai pitch of 2001 where we had that thriller against Australia. It had assistance for the pacers on Day one, and was beautiful for batting on the latter part of Day 1, Day 2 and 3, and then was turning big on Day 4 and 5. A pitch like that would be fantastic. Chennai can produce such pitches. Its after the IPL onslaught that they have moved over to flat and dull batting tracks. Chennai has had the tradition of hosting classic games. Hope they make a comeback!

Agar staying on, why on earth did we pick Doherty for. I really feel for SOK, keeps getting jumped by randoms who have played less than 5 games. Agar does look to have potential and I have more faith in him than Doherty but SOK should have been here.

This could potentially be the worse selection in Australian cricket history.:facepalm

^Hah, I don't know about that. I thought Cameron White playing as the spinning #8 on the 2008 India tour was the most awful selection I can think of.

If Agar's got the talent, which every eye witness says he has, I have ZERO issues with him being selected. Particularly if it's ahead of Doherty who I don't fancy at all. Picking Agar is a massive gamble, but sometimes that's what it takes. And comparatively it's not much less of a gamble than picking Lyon was, or Beau Casson in 2008, or Nathan Hauritz back in 2004 to replace Warne. Or of course, Warne himself back in the day.

I'm interested in the team Australia announced for the A game starting today:
no warner or Clarke, Watson will captain. No Johnson or Pattinson, they are playing all 3 specialist spinners, and it may be just a straight bowl-off between Agar and Doherty for a spot in the 1st Test. No Maxwell or Smith either, Henriques seems to have the inside run at a spot.

Funnily enough though, I doubt Henriques plays if Lyon is the sole spinner. Looking forward to the 1st Test it's likely either combo A:Henriques and either Doherty/Agar vs combo B: Maxwell/Smith and Johnson/Pattinson, depending on whether Aussies play 2 specialist spinners or not. I'd just go with 1 less than whatever India picks. If India plays 3 specialists spinners like they did a couple of times vs England, it's a pretty good clue of what the pitch is going to do...

Casson was an alright pick at least he had quite a few FC games under his belt and he was going alright that season. Can't quite remember what Hauritz form was like back in 04 but from memory it was an okay pick. Lyon was the random one of the lot and Agar will take the cake. Cummins was up there as well.

Gambhir has scored a century after an eternity.

Ashton agar has gone for nearly 8 RPO ,after his 7 overs.Lyon and Doherty have given runs too.Maybe the plan is to over attack the spinners from the start of the tour?

At this point-Starc+Siddle+Henriques-35 runs from 23 overs.
Agar+Doherty+Lyon-142 runs from 26 .

I don't know what is worse for Doherty dislikers such as myself, him being in the team and getting smashed, or him in the team and taking wickets.
I suspected he would do ok here, but all you have to do on these pitches is keep it tight and turn it a bit, which is right up his alley, it worked for Clarke in 2004...

Don't be distracted by Gambhir's century. Let him do it on a consistent basis in domestic cricket before having a re-think about him in the Indian side. He needs time away from the game to work on his flaws. Heard that he is playing 700-800 balls per day and practicing to iron out his flaws. That's a good start. He should also stay away from Sehwag for sometime. Those two guys seem to gel in a bad way these days, plotting Dhoni's downfall and playing for their own interests (read *captaincy*). Dhoni anyway won't last long in tests, but he is India's best ever captain for the shorter formats. He is going nowhere as far as the shorter formats are concerned, and the sooner Sehwag-Gambhir understand this, the better for them.

Also Rohit said Australia attacked too much and that's why they got quite a few easy runs. Australia better learn from their previous trip mistakes. Always attacking without a plan B is sure to backfire on them in Indian conditions. They defended well in that 2004 series, drying up the boundaries for India and thereby troubling them with their run flow. If they constantly attack, they will play into our hands pretty well.

^Yes Rohit said Aussie spinners set attacking fields. Not sure they'll do that in the Tests, despite Clarke's reputation as an attacking captain. It will be a lot of in-out fields, couple of men in close, with probably 3 back on the fence to try and make Indians score in singles and test their patience.

As for Bird, well I'm not sure he'll get the assistance off the seam that he got in Australia. He'll be a good back of a length, bounce bowler, but whether he can get it to reverse consistently or do enough to get wickets on flat decks is another question. Look at Copeland in SL in 2011, or Peter George in India in 2010 - similar type bowlers. Neither did particularly well, but both were economical, and at least those guys got picked, so maybe Bird is the type of guy they like in Asian conditions. I guess we'll see.
