And, Yo Mahesh who I talked about in the other thread could be brought in for the ODI's.
I'd go with this for the 50's.
Tendulkar
Ganguly
Dhoni
Dravid
Yuvraj
Karthik
Tiwary/Kaif/Raina (rotation)
Irfan
Harbajan/Piyush
Mahesh
Zaheer
No Yomahesh, if he does not open the bowling for India A nor take wickets for them, he is clearly not doing well enough to play for the main side.
I would go with this team for the test matches.
1. Dinesh Karthik
2. Wasim Jaffer
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Sourav Ganguly
6. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (*+)
7. Ramesh Powar (check the FC batting average)
8. Irfan Pathan
9. Harbhajan Singh
10. Sreesanth
11. Zaheer Khan
Other potential squad members: Gautam Gambhir; Yuvraj Singh; Ishant Sharma; Piyush Chawla; S Badrinath; VVS Laxman
Dinesh Karthik and Wasim Jaffer opening simply because they worked so well against England. Wasim Jaffer has a proven track record in India too. The big three must play in these batting conditions because they have played many a game in India and are used to the conditions. Batting strength is needed too when we are playing the extra bowler. Yuvraj or VVS should possibly play the odd game in for one of the big three in order to phase them out.
Dhoni to keep and captain. If he is to settle as captain, he must captain for at least a year before being judged. His keeping has improved enough to keep for India without question.
Ramesh Powar to play in the same role he played in Bangladesh, as the fifth bowler and all rounder. His first class batting average is 31.19 which is good enough for an all rounder. I think his FC average will compare well as it is mostly based on games in India. Harbhajan Singh to be the other spin bowler, two spinners are needed in India, especially when you lack pace strength as India do. Bhajji did enough in his Surrey stint to earn a recall, he has always been quality in four/five day games.
Irfan Pathan is also required. On pitches which favour spin more, your pacers need to have an extra dimention and Pathan has swing which has worked against Pakistan before. He will also make up for the lack of one batsman too.
Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth speak for themselves tbh. As for the "other potential squad members":
Laxman: Needs no explanation
Gambhir: Reserve opener, heavily proven in India.
Yuvraj Singh: Needs to be phased into the test side
Badrinath: Played very well for India A, proven in India too.
Ishant Sharma: Provides another dimention in bounce which is needed in India.
Chawla: Very good bowler, should be kept around.
