I'm killing some time before the match begins, so I'm looking into Australia's improvement in ODI cricket in the last 12 months. Only a year ago in the 10 ODIs against SA and NZ, Australia won 3 and lost 6 and probably should have lost the 10th one too. Since last summer Australia has had 20 wins and 8 losses ALL away from home against the best sides, with series wins in UAE (over Pakistan), England, India and in the Champions Trophy. The only series loss was 3-2 away in SA.
What was the difference?
Personnel changes: Ferguson became a regular. Watson came back and became a force at opener again. Dave Hussey and Davey Warner were dropped. Ponting and Mike Hussey played a lot better. Tim Paine replaced Haddin very well. Brett Lee came back in England and bowled well there and in the Champions Trophy. We played a SPECIALIST SPINNER ZOMG!!
But to me the main factor was team balance. After last summer, we started playing 4 specialist bowlers and Hauritz played ALL the time. By contrast last summer's ODIs saw James Hopes batting at #8 and 3 pace bowlers below him. Hauritz played only 1 game. Remember Watson wasn't playing then, so the 5th bowler was a combo of David Hussey, Clarke and White.
Well that killed some time, game's not far off now.
