Pakistan Tour of Australia 2009/10

It's not unfortunate, he's still very new and deserves a chance to develop his game in all formats.

Australia must get its house in order - Peter Roebuck

Australia needs to start addressing the real issues. Indian students killed in Melbourne, Pakistanis assaulted on the field in Perth, blazing headlines around the world, a nation's reputation dragged into the mud, and never mind that the PM is fluent in Cantonese and that many settlers from Africa and the Punjab and elsewhere are as happy as mankind can be. It cannot continue, in cricket or outside.

Lol, look who's talking about reputation.

Exaggeration at its best. Let's ignore climate change and the economy, we all know they are fake.

The issue in the case of Indian students is one away from cricket and not a cricketing issue, the other one is an issue of a poor effort from security and too much alcohol for one young man. It would be hard to call any AFL style tackle an assault! I understand it could have been worse and that is why the security should be getting the sack.

To me the main issue is alcohol and from my reasonably liberal perspective the drunkenness of fans is fairly bad. It seems half the appeal of the ODI is to get pissed with your mates and have a night out with beachballs and doing mexican waves. It's not just blokes either, I've seen plenty of sloshed ladies at the cricket. How else do you get through the middle overs where there's no boundaries and endless singles?? However, if Cricket Australia banned alcohol, I think the ticket sales would drop A LOT. So there is no way they'll ever do it - but they should.

Test cricket and T20 would be less affected by booze. In T20s there's not enough time to get plastered, although you can always arrive drunk I guess. And Test cricket tends to attract the purer fans who actually watch the proceedings, Boxing Day and Barmy Army aside.

Most of the time fans just laugh off the drunken behaviour choosing to laugh at their stupidity rather than turn the nose up, but it's a pretty fine line between harmless banter and suddenly feeling the need to run onto the field, and try to hug a player. Minor aside: it looked to me like he was going for the arm over the shoulder hug, but totally botched it.

I don't think people get "bad" intentions from being drunk. They just wanna have fun and act like kids. I doubt a stabbing could ever occur.

On another note, if someone wanted to harm a cricket player, they would take a gun and shoot them. Not to give anybody ideas or anything :p

Gotta agree with Dare. Ive seen many many terrible things happen with drunk people. Ive gigged in bars and clubs for the last 15 years, had to give countless witness statements and been to many court hearings due to idiots who get drunk and do the dumbest things.

The way I see it, people don't have bad intentions before getting drunk, but after drinking they sort of lose control, and do stupid things they don't even want to.

I wouldn't say it makes people do things they don't want to do, just that they lose sight of things like consequences.

Even then, I think the main problem is that people are just becoming bigger jerks.

It also depends on the personality of the person. If someone is a complete arsehole, being drunk will turn them into a super arsehole.

Honestly I hate being around drunk people. They are loud, obnoxious and usually smell bad

Seems like everyone's excited about tonight's match not (Borat-style comedy..:laugh).

Read that Michael Clarke will be batting #3 and I'm thrilled.
Clarke vows to raise his Twenty20 game | Cricket News | Australia v Pakistan 2009/10 | Cricinfo.com

Why? Clarke is the most reliable Aussie bat - a good man to steady the ship if an early wicket goes down. He doesn't have the raw 6 hitting power synonymous with T20, but he can find gaps in the covers and mid wicket while taking short singles to mid off and mid on. Then after 6 overs, he can work the singles and twos, running hard and rotating the strike to let the more attacking player at the other end go hard.

At opener he had too much pressure to get the team off to a fast start, and at 4 or 5 he often had pressure to lift the run rate with big shots. #3 is the perfect spot for him. If the openers go really well, I would probably bypass Clarke much like NSW did with a couple of times with Simon Katich in the Champions League. Bring him in if you need a bit of steadying, otherwise load up the hitters to attack the lesser middle over bowling. Brad Haddin would be my alternate #3 to attack the spinners. So if the openers get past 4 or 5 overs, pad Haddin up and slide Clarke down.

At least getting the batting order right will make up for the probability that Australia plays only 3 of the 4 fast bowlers. Why we need a 7/8/9 of Haddin/Smith/Johnson is beyond me. That is overkill for a T20. Batting depth in T20 is 90% of the time quite pointless. Move those 3 up to 6/7/8 and play the extra bowling option please Hilditch.

I reckon 3 is the future for Michael Clarke when Ponting vacates the other teams as well. the key for him is nowadays he is still a strokemaker but he has toned down the aggression to a point where he is playing smarter. And I think he plays the quicks a lot better than he used too.
