South Africa in England

Historically SA have struggled against spin yes, but have you watched any SA vs Ind, Pak or SL games recently? You won't find them "struggling" anymore. Warne and Murali are just great bowlers, so you'd expect them to have good numbers, irrespective of their bowling style. Steyn averages 19 against India, 19 against West Indies and 16 against NewZealand, does that mean that these countries can't play fast bowling? Absolutely not.

Impressive innings by Morgan, Middlesex are doing just as well as South Africa did.

Cant wait to see series get started :) will be watching South Africa playing again after a break and good performance will make me happy this summer :D

They've not faced a world class spinner yet either, South Africa struggle against spin. If you look at the worlds prolific spinners, their figures against South Africa are impressive:

Muralitharan: 104 wickets at 22
Warne: 130 wickets at 24
Kumble: 84 wickets at 32
Harbhajan: 35 wickets at 27
Kaneria: 36 wickets at 30

Only Daniel Vettori has really struggled against South Africa, only taking 18 wickets at 69. Against the spinners who get real turn South Africa have struggled, which is proven by the 2 real big spinners, Murali and Warne taking lots of wickets at a low average. The likes of Vettori and Kumble, and even Giles who are more slow bowlers than spinners have been played well by the South Africans, but Monty's different to those 3 in that he gets rip, spin and bounce. I think if England are going to win this series, Monty Panesar is going to be the key. Also, England play pace very well, if the lefties cope well against the angle from Ntini and the swing from Steyn, then we'll stand a real chance of beating South Africa. It's going to be a much closer series than many are anticipating. I'd even go as far as saying that England have the edge, the 1 paced South African attack, the lack of a quality spinner, a weakness against quality spin bowling, it could work out very well for England, we like pace on the ball.

dude, they are warne and murli are world class spinners and you will find those kinda figures against every opponent. so those figures don't tell much.

anyway. .i would like to avoid stats and concentrate on the series . .:D

'Light showers' from BBC usually means barely any rain and it won't disrupt play enough to hinder a potential result.

Man to Man South Africa are FAR AHEAD of England. I'm afraid Pietersen brilliance, Strauss consistency, Sidebottom consistency and Anderson's patches are going to be the only way to win for England. Lets see Sidebottom been a bit patchy of late, Pietersen usually cashes in early so thats good news, Strauss seems to have things settled and Anderson, well Lords is his ground nowadays... England have a good chance for this test match. England have the talent of looking red hot one day then appear like poor wretches the next. It deserves an award really. Good luck to em. I'm supporting them (notice i support the underdogs). :cheers

Rain isn't a worry a lords, more the light because of the cloud. If the conditions are 50/50 we must not bat first. We don't want to have to bat against Steyn in tough conditions, we have no-one capable of ruining his career in the top 3 so we willl just block until we get out which probably not be very long. We will collapse to 180 all out pathetically before South Africa come out and thrash us reaching 250-0 before Sidebottom takes 10 in 10 balls and we have a really tough situation to win the game.

Basically bowl first. Anyway I love how the press are acting as if we're at a disadvantage without Fred, as if we haven't played without him before, we haven't had him for years. He didn't play last time so he is nothing but a bonus if he comes in forcing out someone although I believe Moores would stick with this squad anyway.

It's going to be a great series, full of skill, compassion, arrogance and attitude. I think we are definitely the underdogs, I am happier with that. We play better when we are the worst side.

proteas are definitely the favourites, the english batting needs to fire.

england batting order will be under pressure tommrow cuz sa got top bowlers and england are gonna struggle

England do the unexpected. If they can't reach 400 against NZ, don't be surprised if they somehow get 450 against SA

Stats do not always tell the story steyn might average 19 against india but
out of 19 wickets 12 were of tailenders,he struggles against quality batsman as he is not consistent enough as you saw in india.

south africa played on placid tracks in sub continent, but when in the last test
in india
they played on turning track they were getting out to part time spinners.

South Africa Strengths-
1-Pace Bowling Attack-The trio of fast bowlers are different and have variety
with steyn and morkel bowling at 90 mph and ntini doing a supporting role
bolwing around 85mph,steyn seams the ball away{not swings it},
morkel extracts great bounce from good length
2-Kallis the rock-even though he looked out of form in the last test series,
in seaming conditions he is sa best player
3-Fielding-slip cordon catching is safe withhuge hands of smith, ground fielding
is up a notch with a.b in the side
4-Lower middle order-Sa always have a good lower middle order expect
boucher,morkel to contribute
5-Smith's captaincy ,he is now a experienced captain so knows the tricks of the trade

South africa weakness-
1-Left handers-South africa in recent times have struggled against lefthanders, particularly dale steyn, england have two good lefthanded openers
but after that all are right handed,so england should look at aleft hand batsman in the middle order
2-Weakness agaisnt swing-amla,de villiers do not move their feet much
and prefer playing on the crease or the back foot, there weakness against swing may help england bowlers, also smith struggled against zaheerkhan, sidebottom better target him.
3-spinners-they do not have quality spinners and do not play spin well
so expect some monty magic
4-overconfidence-you smell overconfidence in the sa ranks
5-Opening-the opening pair might have done well on placid tracks on sub continent but it is going to be different challenge in england
6-speed thrils but kills also.

England Strengths-
1-Swing Bowling-England have a better blanced attack for the conditions than south africa with two swing bowlers in sidebottom and anderson and broad hitting the pitch and a good left arm spinner monty
2-K.P,M.V-expect K.p,M.v to play well against south africa
3-Winning-coming from back to back series win,no matter it was against
new zealand but winning is winning
4-opening pair-strauss is in good nick, cook is not in great form but expect them to give good starts as the are lefthanders.
5-Underdog tag-teams usually play well when their is no pressure
6-M.V Captaincy-What can i say?

England weakness-
1-Bell,collingwood are in woods-both are out of form and if early wickets
fall they will find it hard to score runs of south african attack
2-No genuine fast bowler-england after harmy is gone lack extra bit of pace
in the attack
3-lack of lefthanded batsman-there are only two and middle order contains
mostly right handers
4-Conditions-england bowlers mainly depend on swing so conditions are going to play a major factor
5-Real test-Playing after a long time against a good side so have to up their level
6-Home pressure-if team starts losing heads will start rolling

all in all i expect a close series with 2-1 result either side
