Sri Lanka in England/Netherlands

I'm a touch confused by all this fuss about Jayasuriya coming over. As good a player as he has been for Sri Lanka, I don't see what difference he will make. He's not exactly set the world on fire of late and I find it hard to believe he'll adjust to the conditions straight away. He's also 36 and Tom Moody is obviously not happy about him coming over.

37, iirc, not to mention the fact he's facing one of the best bowlers to left handers with the new ball. (Hoggy if you hadn't worked it out).

It's not really sending the right message to these young openers by bringing him over. However, I do think Sri Lanka need a bit more experience and depth if they are to be able to force results. I think Jayasuria and Attapatu would do that to their batting like up. What has actually happened to Attapatu?

He's injured and is the captain, so a massive loss.

Yes, huge blow, the batting line up would look much more solid with him in it. Thanks for that stevie, I knew you did something besides hide in the dark all day! :)

It definately would.
But i suppose the selectors had earlier named Vaas as Marvan's deputy.
Jayawardena was sacked from the post following a horrid tour of India.

Bringing in Jayasuriya is pointless. Ok, it probably will help them this series.

But he's not going to be playing Tests past 37 is he?

play the youngsters, the quicker they learn the quicker they progress to Test standards.

Well Sri Lanka can feel that they may have a chance of taking this series so I would expect them to select Jayasuriya to open. Also Jayasuriya seems to fire after a break after games. E.g the game against Aus at the SCG where he blasted the century. Plus Mubarak is pretty pathetic at opening or they could opt for Vandort who seems to have a pretty solide technique.

I think given the current situation having Jayasuriya back with make the top order solid. At the moment we have two really young players opening the batting. With Attapattu out for the series, some experinced player at the top will def help. True he's a bit out of form, they said the same thing about him before coming to Australia before the VB series and he turned things around.

Don't forget he also played a county season just last year and he's been playing county for a while so he should have the knowledge and the skills to adopt the condition reasonably easy.

Why shhouldn't he play? Sri Lanka will have a better chance of winning the series with him playing than not playing.

Yes but he won't be playing tests for much longer at nearly 37 is he?

Back your youngster, after all they'll be playing Tests in 3 years not Sanath.

You're just afraid he's gonna regain his form against England. :p He averages 51 in England, I wouldn't be too afraid.

What about Mr.Shane Warne ?
He's planning to play the 2009 Ashes too.

Planning to is different from will play.

Shane will be nearing 39 then iirc.

I'm not bothered about his form nightprowler, I'd just hate to see Sri Lanka suffer even longer in the long run.

I'll put it this way.

Is Udal the answer to our spin problems?
