Sri Lanka in England/Netherlands

Well played Sri Lanka, a fully deserved victory. You wouldn't believe the gap between these two teams is just 4 on the rating column. For the most part it looked like men against boys out there today. Apart from Bell, Colly, Pietersen, Harmison and Darlymple, England were poor today and deserved to beaten convincingly again. The way the last wicket fell just sums up England's performance really; hapless. Now we really have to win at Durham on Saturday or we lose yet another ODI series.

It's funny to see that before this series Sri Lanka had a rating of 3.00 to win the series and England 0.83. I think on Saturday Sri Lanka will grab the series.

Whilst it was a poor team performance, there was two big problems, Sajid Mahmood and the amount of wides, again! It was just as well Mahmood didn't bowl his 10 overs, Mick Lewis may well have lost his biggest claim to fame has he done. There is also no excuse for 21 wides, no matter how inexperienced the side is. This shambles needs to sorted out England, and fast.

Hadn't we not bowled any extras at all in the first 10 overs? If so then 32 extras is all the more appalling.

P.S: I may as well get my usual rant about Geraint Jones being England's No.1 out of the way now; That was never out! Although, what goes around comes around I suppose.

How come you guys didn't leave him on :(
Clearly Harmison was your guys best bowler, keep it tight and got the wickets. The other guys took a hammering but thats usually the case when Jayasuriya gets going. More times than not SL will get over 300.

The shambles of the side can only be sorted out when the shambles of the backroom and selectors is sorted out.

The field Saj had to bowl to in the powerplay didn't help him.

Strauss isn't good enough.

I'd try Colly tbh, set by exampe.

I was a touch angry when I posted what I did, calmed down a bit now. This game is yet more proof, if any were needed, that we our strongest side out to compete against the decent/top class sides in any form of the game. Harmison was supurb, but the only real support he got was from Dalrymple. The fielding was also a touch slack again from what I heard, for which there isn't much excuse.

Even so, you don't concede 40 odd runs from 4 overs, which later becomes 80 from 7, unless you bowl some real crap.

Reason I think which contribute to this slack form is that they are probably thinking too much about the Ashes and the WC. They seem to have not really performed to their full potential against Sri Lanka and really have not shown them the respect they deserve ala against Pakistan last year. Bowling seems to be the real problem now, whereas in the test series it was the opposite. Harmison, the lone star bowler and showed that he would of had a big impact if he played in the test series. The outfield catches were pretty good by England, especially those catches by Pietersen and Bresnan. Really do hope they get their act together for the next match and especially in the test series against Pak.

The fielding was good, no droppped catches ony part was not hitting the stumps but even then only once would it have mattered.
We out fielded Sri Lanka for sure.

Saj did bowl really poorly I never denied that, just saying his figures weren't helped by shoddy captaincy in the placement of fielders stakes.

Mahmood did bowl a lot during the power plays. Thats Strauss's fault. His fields were poor, he could have had an edge early off Plunkett with a third slip, but things like that happen I guess. When it came to taking that third power play and some of the other fields he set were terrible. He had the wrong bowlers operating at the wrong times. Trescothick seems a better bet for captain. He is experianced, he seems pretty calm, reminds me a little of Fleming really.

Far too many wides were bowled. Bresnan, Mahmood and Dalrymple bowled 4 a piece with three from Pietersen. The commentators were singing out for Gough.

Even so, on the Mahmood front, he did bowl poorly and not to the field he was set. It was the wrong field, but he continuously bowled to Jaysuria balls on leg stump which he belted for fours and sixes. He didn't really deserve the consolation wickets he got from batsmen hitting out at the end.

England chase was alright, but someone needed 100 and it didn't come.

Strauss is out of form big time aswell atm.

Vaughan may not be a great ODI player but his captaincy more than makes up for it.

Collingwood should be captain for this series, he has had a good game in the 20/20 and the first two matches of this series. I thought Strauss was out of form before he was captain, he has got even worse since then. I really do want Gough and Ali in the squad, Gough is experienced and for the most part, disciplined. Ali can sometimes be expensive, but he backs that up by taking wickets and creating chances, whereas Mahmood seems to playing for Sri Lanka with the amount of runs he is giving away. I am licking my lips about Dalrymple though; two good all round performances in his first two games (not counting Ireland) has convinced me that he belongs in this team, and even when Fred is back, he maybe able to bat at 7 with GoJo at 8. I really hope England win on Saturday; I don't want to be going to the Old Trafford with England playing for nothing but pride.
