What has Mohammad Sami done to deserve selection? Hmm.
I will give you this though - I think Waqar Younis has alot to do with his recall. In Waqar's first stint with the national team, he really wanted to work on Sami because he thought he had potential, so Waqar has always had a soft spot for Sami.

I have read in a local newspaper that Waqar is behind Sami's recall. Waqar is a legend and he may have spotted some talent in sami. But 33 tests are more than enough for any talent to show. I am perplexed. Mohammad Sami belongs to Karachi and rumors are that leader of an ethnic Karachi based political party has used his influence for sami's selection :doh.

Pakistan has the capability to destroy this political party inside-out, why we haven't done it, I don't know.

whatever the party is,it must not interfere in cricket.No reason of trying a player hwo is almost dead even in your domestic cricket.They are bunch of new and young bowlers who are trying to get their place in Pakistan XI,then what is the reason to try an old crap?

And to make it worst, they are trying to justify this blatantly wrong selection by putting the blame on Yousaf and Waqar by implying that those had asked for sami :doh. Yousaf may be a dork but he is not dork enough to demand the crappiest possible bowler in Pak's history. This is simply insane. I hope new minister of sports takes notice and fires the fat a** of Ijaz BUTT

I was thinking about this, because I'm sad, but I think Hughes will have to wait for Katich to move out.
When you look at other teams, SA and Sri Lanka who have promoted aggressive middle order players, and along with the windies and india who have naturally attacking openers, it's been hugely succesful.
maybe SA's needs time to prove itself but I think Australia does not want two unorthodox grinders up top, Watson also adds a the left hand/right hand combo factor to the opening pair.
I think the aussies are probably thinking that there's no point putting hughes into play a role that's already occupied and see watson as adding something else to overall make-up of the squad.
on another note, if pakistan can lift themselves, this series is not going to be a walk over, they have a much better attack than the windies brought, and as soon as NZ lost Bond, who is a true world class player better than anyone in australia's attack, Pakistan proved a lot more resolute with the bat.
of course they still collapse when they notion strikes them but they just about match up player for player, it's australia's attitude and fielding that puts them ahead, but not by a big distance.

The thing is the other guys pushing for selection aren't much experienced. White and Bailey would be the others realistically in line to replace Ponting. If Hughes comes in then Katich or Watson can move to 3.

Hughes in, Katich at 3 for the MCG i reckon. Or maybe Marsh at 3.
Butt really likes playing in Australia, IIRC he scored runs here last time and hes already made 150. Tassie are letting the country down by not dominating the touring side! Krezja is getting smashed and ain't helping his cause for test selection.
