West Indies in England

Squad announced on SSN;

Collingwood (c)
Anderson
Bell
Broad
Cook
Mascarenhas
Panesar
Pietersen
Plunkett
Prior
Shah
Sidebottom
Trott
Yardy

As expected, Strauss and Vaughan miss out. Delighted that Dimi and Trott have been called up. Collingwood was always going to get the captaincy so no surprise there really.

Interesting...good calls though, all of them imo.

So which 3 will miss out for the first ODI.

My team from that squad for the first ODI:

1. Prior
2. Cook
3. Trott
4. Pietersen
5. Collingwood
6. Bell
7. Yardy
8. Mascarenhas
9. Sidebottom
10. Panesar
11. Anderson

What do you think?

Exciting stuff.

Yardy

I'm very happy with the squad except Yardy. He didn't contribute much with Bat or Ball in his previous attempt. Mind you, with the job that Moores has done with Prior, I'd give him a chance to give another Sussex boy ago.

Very happy with Dimi's selection, I wouldn't change that when Ravi is fit, I'd drop Yardy from the squad, then it'd look a very good one day outfit in my opinion.

Trott's earned his chance. Again very nice to see Moores recognising County Cricket achievements rather than ignoring it like Fletcher.

Cook deserves another go, He did well enough in his first two ODI's not to be dropped but strangly he was. Besides, he's going to be the next England Test captain anyway.

My Starting XI.
Alistair Cook.
Matt Prior. -Keeper-.
Ian Bell.
Kevin Pietersen.
Jonothan Trott.
Paul Collingwood. -Captain-
Dimi Mascherenhas.
Stuart Broad.
Ryan Sidebottom.
Monty Panesar.
James Anderson.

Sidebottom and Andersen to take the new ball.
The tail isn't ideal, but it's because I don't rate Yardy in either capacity, It'd be Broad that would miss out for the returning Bopara in the future, with Bopara batting higher and Dimi going down to 8.

1. Prior
2. Cook
3. Trott
4. Pietersen
5. Collingwood
6. Bell
7. Yardy
8. Mascarenhas
9. Sidebottom
10. Panesar
11. Anderson

Replace Panesar with Broad and i'd be happy. I really don't think that Panesar suits the shorter format.

id have:
cook
prior (wk)
trott
pietersen
bell
collingwood (c)
mascarenhas
anderson - 1st bowler
plunkett
sidebottom - 2nd bowler
panesar/yardy yardy can offer more with the bat, and has a very good arm ball. they wouldnt choose 2 left arm spinners would they ?

Anderson above Plunkett AND Sidebottom?

People shouldn't under-rate Yardy, without him we'd have lost the Pakistan series last summer rather than draw it. He's a good player.

Animator why have Bell at 3?

well for the battin order it would be for the tailenders:

yardy - if they chose him
plunkett
sidebottom
panesar - if they chose him
anderson

Panesar still needs more one day games i think, he really hasn't played many for Northants too and it's so different i think it would be unfair to drop him

Well, I'm sort of going with their roles in the side. With Bell at 6 you'd need him to either come in late and hit a lot of runs quickly, which he can't do.
He's more of a natural number 3. Cook/Bell would bat through the innings for a ton in my eyes, and with Prior providing the explosion at the top of the innings with Pietersen/Trott to come in and continue and have Collingwood carry it on in the last 10-15 overs with his finishing of an innings.

I think Bell should be a bit of a floater, he should come in during the middle overs when we need someone regularly finding the gaps and who will put the bad balls away.

And it shouldn't be ignored that even though Cook has only had 2 ODI innings he's got 80 runs from them at a strike rate of 86 odd. Assuming he keeps on at that pace then thats a faster SR than Tresco has so who knows.

Exactly, although I'd still like to use Bell and Cook as the anchors of the innings. One of those to to bat through for a hundred would be ideal. With Pietersen, Trott and Prior around them early that means we could get of to a great start, and then Collingwood can come in a push it around in the last 10 like he does so well.
