2007 Twenty20 World Championship

In my opinion, one of Ganguly, Tendulkar and Dravid should not be picked for this 20/20 world cup (i would want two, but india wont do it considering that we are more star oriented).

Kaif and Raina are a must for this format. ODI's itself place emphasis on fielding these days. More so for 20/20's where fielding specialists will work well. Also we need to bring back Pathan to get an all rounder. We dont need express pace bowlers. We need bowlers who can bowl line and length, and Pathan would fit in well (he is on the redemption road).

I feel India can try out a new captain for this tournament (though its unlikely). Dravid is not suited for this particular format, and he has become really slow these days. I would spring up a surprise here and give the captaincy for this tournament to Dinesh Karthick. He has been hailed by Chappell as a leadership material, and he was the captain of the winning Tamil Nadu side in the domestic 20/20 championship that was held recently.

If we can do most of this, India can be a major force in this tournament. I am more keen in India getting into the semi finals than the India-Pakistan match. Want India to go a good distance.

My ideal team would be:

Dinesh Karthick (captain)
Robin Uthappa
Sachin Tendulkar
MS Dhoni
Rahul Dravid
Yuvraj Singh
Mohammed Kaif
Suresh Raina
Irfan Pathan
Piyush Chawla
Harbhajan Singh
Ajit Agarkar
Zaheer Khan
S Sreesanth
RP Singh

India and Pakistan should both go through to round 2 unless we have a really huge upset of the Scotts beating either of the 2.

I don`t know why you`d be laughing anyway ? A true cricket fan will be hoping for the best sides to reach the business end of the event, so as to avoid dead games and flagging interests like inthe 50Fifty world cup.

India and Pakistan will bring the crowds into the stadia, IMO.
Well if India & Pakistan can't knock off one of the minnow teams then they aren't really the best are they?

And why would I care how many people show up to the game?

Australias preliminary 30 man squad has been announced.

George Bailey, Nathan Bracken, Luke Butterworth, Stuart Clark, Michael Clarke, Dan Cullen, Brendan Drew, Adam Gilchrist, Brad Haddin, Shane Harwood, Matthew Hayden, Ben Hilfenhaus, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Phil Jaques, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Andrew McDonald, Ashley Noffke, Marcus North, Ricky Ponting, Luke Ronchi, Andrew Symonds, Shaun Tait, Adam Voges, Shane Watson, Cameron White.

It will be cut down to 15 in mid-july.

I think the squad should be

Hayden
Gilchrist
Ponting
Symonds
M. Hussey
White
Watson
Hogg
Lee (if fit)
Bracken
Tait (if fit)

Back Ups
Hodge
Voges
Harwood
Hilfenhaus

I don't have Clarke in my squad because I don't believe he is/will be a good twenty20 player. He is generally a pusher and doesn't hit big power shots like a Symonds, or a Hayden, therefore I think we'd be better off with proven big hitters and 20/20 batsmen in Hodge, Voges and White
I'd swap Watson with Hodge.

Which is the greater issue. Consistent bounce doesn't equal high scores if you can't get the ball off the square. The speed off the pitch and over the field is what creates large totals. The field in particular is underrated because you don't have to attack every single ball; if one ball an over gets weird bounce, the batsman can still quite conventionally score 5-20 runs in the over while playing defensively once. What is the difference, though, is that on a heavy outfield, the ball just can't make it to the fence often enough. On a smooth and perfectly trimmed field, shots race away so fast that what would otherwise be a single to the outfielder, is over the line before he can dive.

I don't think Clarke would be useless, but I agree, he wouldn't be the best.

I reckon it'd suck if Hodge didn't make the first team. The interesting thing is whether Watson will be needed to cover a 4-over gap. Symond's variety will be much more useful if he can use it constructively and though White is admittedly cheese (Hodge himself could also be of use), he'd scarcely be needed for more than a few balls and in my opinion, getting our most experienced T20 batsman out there is more important.

White should never ever bowl in an international 20/20 match. He just bowls way too much crap and way too many hittable deliveries. Coming from a man who has umpired him in grade cricket on numerous occasions, he is nothing more than a grade cricket bowler.

Yay KKD!

Yah, same here but i doubt that he'll get it.
even though i hate him, i think Viru deserves a spin. It is 2020, and he is a slogger.

Piyush might get massacred though. Depends how the pitches are.

Can still bowl Hodge. Like I said though, Symonds is more than handy enough to bowl four overs on most days.

You cannot change a captain simply for a twenty20 world cup? It makes no sense to oust a captain with a 100% twenty20 international record (:p), and for someone as young and unproven as Karthik, it can only mean confusion.

If he has finished rehab, Munaf Patel would be useful for the twenty20 world cup also, his impecable line and length and the facet that he is tough to get away could be critical. Sehwag surely is a must have for this championship also, an attacking batsman can whack himself into form in this sort of format on quick South African wickets. The disappointing 20s and 30s (off 20 to 30 balls) in ODIs he is so famous for could be match winning in twenty20.

You also cannot drop Ganguly. Not only are all rounders critical to twenty20, but there is no reason to drop him. The only rational explanation is that he bats defensively in ODIs, but anyone can see that this is to bat the fifty overs in an often neglected role of the opener batting through about 40 overs and getting a high 50 or hundred. Yes, I know he has a poor twenty20 record, but is it worth neglecting a veteran who can bowl, just to bring in a fielder? As for Kaif, he has a poor twenty20 record (average in the 20s with low strike rate) and I don't think fielding alone can get you in a team since the ball is hardly going to come to you much in a twenty20. You are right that fielding is the key in twenty20s, but all round fielding is more important than individual fielding - critical difference there. Raina, I have no problems with.

Nor do I have any problems with anyone else in your squad. I still believe Sreesanth is not good in limited overs cricket, but you cannot drop a star like him just yet.

Why would you care how many people turn up to the game ?
So why was the cricketing world so disappointed with the poor turnout at the 2007 World Cup in the Carribean ?

I would like to ask the members here whether they like watching games with packed houses (even on tv) or the dull ones with a 100 people turning up ?
Why do people consider games at the Eden Gardens or the MCG so special ?

That is why I do care about the number of people turning up to the game as there would simply be no atmosphere to the game , especially in a World Championship like this one.

Munaf Patel would get eaten for breakfast in 20/20. He doesn't have significant pace, if he's going to play because he's a line and length bowler then thats an horrific selection. Line and Length doesn't work in 20/20. It's all about the bowlers who have pace, can swing the ball, have variation, lots of slower balls etc and the spinners taking the pace off. With some brilliant fielding and youthful batting with a couple of experience old heads guiding them.

Stuart Clark cannot be selected for a 20/20. Line and length goes out the ground.

Exactly. Brett Lee could be deadly in 20/20 imo. Full of pace, if he uses it well, bouncers, yorkers, slower balls etc I'd back him to be one of the bowlers of the tournament.

I'm looking forward to seeing him and (thought I hate him) Akhtar back in action
