Australia's Tour Of India - 2008

I don't like the idea of BCCI appealing against Gambhir's ban. He made a mistake so let him bear the punishment. But I do feel Watto's punishment is too light.

There it is you punish one with only 10% match fee and the other one with a test ban. the person who provoked him with sledging is set free so lightly :rolleyes:

BCCI has done the right appealing against ..

The Aussies give it to every other team. When someone gets back at them,they themselves dont leave it on the field.

Watson ought to have been fined for provocating Gauti.

After all it was Watson who started it...TBH I would have walloped Watson one in the mouth to shut him up.

I think we should establish the difference between verbal sledging and physical contact. The fact that Gambhir has previously been fined 85% of his match fee for running into Afridi in 2007 was a big factor behind him receiving a one match ban.

Match referee - Chris Broad said:
"The decision to find Gambhir guilty of a Level 2 offence is indicative of the fact that any degree of physical contact is unacceptable," Broad said. "Had Gambhir been charged with and found guilty of a charge under 2.4 [for deliberate or inappropriate physical contact], due to his previous offence, I would have been obliged to impose a minimum penalty of a two-test match ban. In the view of the umpires, the facts of this case - the lightness of the physical conduct and the element of provocation - would not justify such a penalty."

Broad took in to account Gambhir's previous fine for running into Pakistan's Shahid Afridi and said he hoped the batsman would learn from the incident

CricInfo said:
Gambhir had a series of verbal clashes with Watson during the post-lunch session and then ran into him when trying for a second run in the 51st over of the Indian innings. Gambhir later said elbowing Watson in the chest " wasn't deliberate " but he was charged with a Level 2 offence for not conducting play "within the spirit of the game as well as within the laws of cricket". Watson was slapped with a Level 1 charge under the same offence.

Watson pleaded not guilty to the offence during his hearing but Broad found him "guilty of verbally engaging with Gambhir in a manner that was not in keeping with the spirit of cricket". There is no right of appeal for Level 1 offences and the match referee's decision is final.

Gambhir, however, pleaded guilty to the charge and he could face a ban of one Test. Level 2 penalties range from a fine of between 50 and 100% of match fees and/or a ban of one Test or two ODIs but the player has the right to appeal against the decision within 24 hours.

They are different charges with different penalties and different appeals procedures. It is right that there are different levels for different types of not playing the game "within the spirit of the game as well as within the laws of cricket". From a neutral, I completely agree with everything that has gone from the match referee and on field umpires.

Its always them Aussies who start it.

icyman added 2 Minutes and 17 Seconds later...

Crcinfo's version says that the Gambhir did'nt conduct the play in the spirit of the game.Honestly whatever happened in Aus last year,especially in Sydney wasnt in the spirit of the game either.

Gambhir was physically involved and Watto was verbally :D FIFA 06 WC Final

Matarrazi = Watto :D

Gambhir = Stupid Zidane :laugh

Lets not get Sydney here mate and move on from what has happened.

This match will most probably be a draw unless India can get some early wickets tomorrow. So the only possible results are: And Indian win (5%) and a draw (95%). Too bad that I put 50k vCash on India.

So what do i do if your are English? i didn't said to any particular person here i said what's happening .. What i said is right and truth...

why don't you shut up :)

No, what you're saying is mindless drivel caused your love of a team that can apparently do no wrong.

Lets not get the forum divided into two groups again, we have had enough of it. Gambhir has been banned for a test and thats it. Provocation is no excuse for physical contact. Hope he learnt his lesson. But replacing him will be a touch task for us.

Gambhir claimed he didn't elbow him. Since when does the match referee know what is physically going on inside his body? With Zidane it was blatantly obvious but with Gambhir it wasn't, And Gambhir isn't the sort of player who would do that. Why the flippin' heck should Gambhir pay for something Watson did. If anyones gone against the spirit of the game here its Watson, Just because he can't take a top order if his life depends on it he has to open his useless mouth full of garbage...

Watson has used his mouth not hand or legs ;) I know its not the spirit but what Gambhir was a physical abuse.

What Watson was doing (Trying his absolute best to make Gambhir lose his concentration because he couldn't get him out in an normally if his life depended on it) was obvious. However what Gambhir did was debatable, And believe me Gambhir was already on top of Watson at the time so he had no reason to elbow him.

In case you didn't know, moving elbows from side to side or in any type of repetitive way helps a human being to maintain balance, Something required to move without falling over...
