West Indian Tour of India, 2013: Sachin's 200th Test Appearance

25 test, 873 runs @ 23.59 & 50 wickets @ 38.08 - is not good enough. Once Sammy is in the test team, the windies are either a batsman short or a bowler short. Recently tests vs Zimbabwe, windies had Ramdin batting @ # 6. Ramdin is not a test match # 6, he is barely good enough to bat @ # 7. His batting ability compared to other international test keepers such as Prior, haddin, De Villiers, Chandimal, Mushfiqur, Dhoni is below par. He is only better than Pakistan test keeper Sarfraz Ahmed & whoever keeps for mediocre Zimbabwe.

Thus if the selectors chose to bat Ramdin @ 6 to play Sammy, that is a recipe for disaster in India.

Yeah, as much as I like Sammy he just is not good enough for test cricket. If you want to be an all-rounder I think you need to average high 20s in batting, low 30s in bowling should get you a spot these days although there are not many genuine all rounders anymore.

Ye Sammy's all-round skills is only good enough for ODI & T20 cricket.

Windies unlike for much of the last 15 years ever since they won the T20 world cup arguably their best group of talented players players emerging since the early 1990s. But their selectors are potentially stunting their progress by picking the wrong players for the wrong formats.

Well presuming the BCCI bullying doesn't prevent that SA tour from happening, its probably best he retired now and didn't go SA.

He deserves to go out on a potential high - although windies have bowlers who could make his last series miserable. But like Dravid in 2011/12 AUS series he doesn't want to be walking wicket in his final series.

So what should have been a draw has ended in a defeat for WI A thanks to our long long tail which did not wag, expectedly enough. Meanwhile, Zaheer gets a 4fer but at the same time he has the highest economy rate. Struggled a tad with no-balls too. I guess he will have to wait a little longer to be back in the national team.

rather undignifies exit for sachin I think. he departs with a chorus of people asking why the hell he didn't go sooner and with a custom made series for his retirement that smacks of being the spoiled kid.

wonderful player, the best batsman of the last 20 years but he should really have just stepped down half way through the australian series.

^^

Tendulkar was always a larger than cricket figure in India. Not even Bradman held the affection of a nation (even though he played when AUS during the first great depression). So i don't think outsiders should be surprised that the BCCI would try to give him a celebratory end to his career.

West Indies in India 2013-14 : Umesh Yadav, Shami Ahmed in India Test squad | Cricket News | India v West Indies | ESPN Cricinfo

Squad: MS Dhoni (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, M Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar , Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav, Shami Ahmed, Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma

Really wanted Zaheer to come back. Strong possibility of him returning if the current crop of fast bowlers fail against WI.

Jadeja has been rested because of some shoulder strain, which opens up a spot in the playing XI itself. Would be interesting to see if Rohit Sharma gets a nod here now.

Decent squad but I really want to see Badrinath in the squad. I really think he can do good and give 4 to 5 years to this Indian team. Still it's good to see Rohit in the squad. I also think Jadeja does not fit into test 11 if we are playing overseas and having an extra batsman in South Africa will be useful. I also think Rahane should be given a chance ahead of Rohit because he has been in the squad for such a long time now. Rohit can also come in as a back-up opner. In bowling, I would go or Shami Ahmed instead of Ishant Sharma. So the team should look something like this.

Dhawan
Vijay
Pujara
Sachin
Kohli
Rahane
Dhoni
Ashwin
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Ojha
Shami Ahmed

Really wanted Zaheer to replace Ishant Sharma for the test squad,He had got much fitter and has also done a fine job in the domestic matches he played . His selection would have been atleast worth a try. Don't know why he Dhoni is supporting Ishant this much although Ishant showed no commitment to his captain at all throughout the Australian ODI series :rolleyes:rolleyes
Well my playing XI would be something like this:
1) Rohit Sharma
2) Shikhar Dhawan
3) Cheteshwar Pujara
4) Sachin Tendulkar
5) Virat Kohli
6) Ajinkya Rahane
7) M S Dhoni(c) (wk)
8) R Ashwin
9) Bhuvaneshwar Kumar
10) Shami Ahmed
11) Pragyan Ojha

But I doubt a chance that Dhoni would try Rohit Sharma at the middle order instead of Ajinkya Rahane in my squad and give a chance for M Vijay to open in the first test :(:(:(

A Badrinath would do no different job than a Pujara in the Test team. I cannot see both of them playing in the same team, unless a necessity arises where our test batsman fail terribly. No doubt about that, he should have got more chances in Tests than maybe Yuvraj.

But this is not an ODI series. We can afford to play both Pujara and Badrinath in the same team because they both are solid bat with good technique. We need both of them in our test team because they have the temperament to survive and play long innings which will be crucial for the team. After Sachin, the most experienced player in that line-up is Dhoni and than Virat or Murli Vijay which sounds a bit scary to me. That is why I am also inclined to go toward Gambhir at the opening instead of Murli Vijay in South Africa. This is just my opinion though and I know it is unlikely to happen.

Agreed with calls that Badrinath should be picked post Tendulkar, always impressed be as a potential test batsman.

I see, was also curious to see Zaheer returning back. Looks like, Ashwin-Mishra or Ojha-Ishant-Umesh going to make into team XI. ;) It would have to be gamble for rest of the bowlers if they can make their way inside team XI.
