400 run lead is not required for a last day chase. india should play for a win,not for a draw.

This post is pretty old, but last time I checked, Dhoni should have been placing a series win over Australia slightly higher than a few fans' notions of what Test cricket needs to survive. It's not a good look for Test cricket... sure. But then you have to condemn Australia's 2004 win in India, because they employed the very same tactics.

I never said he was wrong in doing it, if it's in the rules then you are free to do it. It's up to the ICC to change the rules to ensure it doesn't happen again especially if they want Test cricket to be here in the next decade. Introducing more strict wide rules would be a start. And this isn't just the Indians, I know we did it against the Kiwis when Chris Cairns was going crazy which killed the game.

I'm embarrassed. Ponting should be embarrassed. Putting himself ahead of the tweaking team. It's tweaking ridiculous.

We cant see what is to happen they are Australians they can go hard to Pacers,Spinners score at a RR of 4 (we saw earlier) yes India Should play this for a win. let we play today and handover morning i doubt Dhoni will declare maybe today itself

350+ is it safe to declare then?

This is the 4th innings and they are under pressure. 350 is more than enough. Australia are 1-0 down and need to win this test in order to retain the trophy.

I can't see Dhoni declaring until well past 400. He will make sure the draw is safe and then try for the win, he doesn't have to setup the game as the series is India's atm.

I dont think he will play until we have a 400 run lead.

You can't really introduce strict rules when it comes to strategy, though. If anything, the ICC need to prevent captains like Ricky Ponting from getting away with such poor over rate.

I remember once in the Australia tour that Ricky Ponting actually took the second new ball after the playing time had finished (in the extra 30 minutes) because he had no control over the over rate. If they make one rule change, they should make sure that they enforce an in-game penalty for poor over-rate--for example the captain cannot take a new ball in the extra 30 minutes if they've fallen way behind the over rate.

With Dhoni's defensive tactics--it's just common sense. The Aussie fans may not like it because they're about to lose a Test series, but that doesn't mean you can make a rule against it. If anything, this is good for Test cricket, since it shows the rest of the world that the Aussies are now beatable, and that the Test cricket championship is up for grabs (provided the Aussies don't chase down the eventual target).

India slowly but surely shutting the doors for australia

The ODI wide system would be a good start. A number of balls that the Indians bowled would have been classed as wides. Now I didn't watch the session in detail cause it got boring but having the ODI wide system would allow the batters the chance to actually play shots.

And yes Ponting has been bad but Kumble and Dhoni haven't been great with it either. Each day of the entire test series has required the extra 30 minutes and only one day have we seen the full 90 completed which required the 30 minutes as well. So it's not just a Ponting thing, both teams have been poor with their over rates. I agree we need some sort of system to punish teams with poor over rates.

This is precisely why it is called test cricket, it can be boring, exciting but always fascinating it is like life, emotions changes every hour, every session, every day this test match is a testimony of it.
